TrueNas Server Install

I’ve been working through some Udemy courses to learn/study for the AZ-800 test, which got me interested in homelabbing. I’ve messed with this in the past on an All-in-One PC 10+ years ago. I never did much other than mess with WordPress and connect to it remotely from my laptop. A NAS server came into my possession recently that I’ve had the pleasure of wiping and reinstalling TrueNAS on, so I wanted to document some of my thoughts.

I did some light research on TrueNAS Core and Scale before proceeding with the Scale “Dragonfish” 24.04 iso. I couldn’t decide on a goal that I wanted to accomplish other than possibly using this for virtualizing some Windows 22 servers to test/lab some things for the AZ-800.

Once installed I quickly got invested in getting the storage and datasets setup. The below is what was completed:

– Created one giant pool of the two used HDD’s(setup in a raid1 configuration)

– Created a share with a root level Folder that would eventually get used for tax documents

– Created 2 network accounts with access to the share

After about an hour of reading through permissions and making some security changes I finally had a working Windows share that was available remotely from my laptop to Add & Delete folders/files. I felt pretty accomplished with what was done, but realized not a lot more could be done for the night. After searching through TrueNAS apps and Truechart apps there were so many possibilities that it was honestly overwhelming.

The next day I attempted to setup an app and prove that I could make it work, but could not get the App service to start for some reason. The documentation seemed straightforward, so what was wrong? Essentially you set the apps pool and should be good to go. After troubleshooting I found that I had changed the Node IP on my own terms thinking it should point to the server IP address, but after changing this back to default(0.0.0.0) wouldn’t you know the App service started running…

This will probably turn into a running theme, but just reading a manufacturers documentation thoroughly is an underutilized skill…or maybe that’s just me
